Orlando City Soccer fans will soon be able to get a special purple license plate. In order to make it official though, Orlando City Soccer Club needs to have at least 3,000 pre-sale vouchers sold for the new plates. The vouchers are now available at $25 plus taxes and fees. Once 3,000 pre-sale vouchers have been ordered, the Department of Motor Vehicles will manufacture the specialty plates and send them to tax collector offices and license plate agencies across the state.
Once that happens, all customers who hold a pre-sale voucher will be sent information on how to redeem the offer and get their plates. Once official, 55% of funds raised from the sale of the plates will go to the Professional Sports Development Trust Fund within the Department of Economic Opportunity and 45% will go to Enterprise Florida, Inc. You can order by clicking here (additional fees apply) or at your local Tax Collector's office or DMV. When you see a specialty license plate, you get a glimpse into someone's life - their favorite team, their college, their job, or perhaps, the greatest gift they've given or received. It was a very special meeting Tuesday at the Manatee County Tax Collector's Office. Three people, brought together by organ donation, went inside to buy vouchers for the new Donate Life Florida specialty license plates. Allyson Notine's baby girl, Ainsley, needed a liver transplant at just 5 months old. "You were lucky and a family made that decision that gave us this life," Allyson said to her daughter. "Her first birthday was definitely a milestone event just to get there." There have been many milestones since then. The most recent include turning 18 and earning her driver's license. "It makes me want to give back in any way I can," Ainsley said. Allyson Notine knew Gretchen Fowler from their kids' school. But Allyson's "Donate Life" license plate sparked an important conversation. "My son, Anthony was an organ donor eight years ago. He was in an accident and we decided as a family that it was the right thing to do," Fowler said. "It wasn't even a question. It was, what do we do to make this tragedy turn into something positive? And what better way than helping somebody else and giving their life back?" The donation of Anthony's organs saved five lives. Currently, more than 119,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for organ transplants. 5,500 are waiting in Florida. Something as simple as a license plate could inspire a new donor and bring those numbers down. Though the Donate Life Florida specialty plate went away for a couple of years, legislation enacted in September has allowed the non-profit to produce it again. "It's exposure. It's getting people to talk about it because they see it and maybe ask more about it to learn more," Allyson said. 3,000 vouchers must be pre-sold within two years before the plate can go into production. On Tuesday, together, Ainsley, Allyson and Gretchen walked into the Manatee County Tax Collector's Office to be among the first to buy their plate vouchers. Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 1135 into law, approving the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation's Blue Angels specialty license plate. The plate features four blue and gold F/A-18s between the words "Florida" and "Home of the Blue Angels." The Department of Motor Vehicle's process to establish a new specialty license plate requires the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation to sell 3,000 vouchers. According to Escambia County Tax Collector's office, 2,040 have been purchased as of November 6, 2020. The voucher is redeemable for the plate once the sale requirement has been met and the plates are in production. This is accomplished by pre–sale of a voucher that indicates drivers will purchase the plate. Purchasing a voucher ensures the plate will go into production as quickly as possible. "There's a lot of enthusiasm throughout the state about this tag," said Duane Thiessen, President and CEO of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. "Revenues generated from the plate will support STEM education programs and ensure the next generation of children and adults have access to our unique collection of aircraft and exhibits," said Thiessen. You can order by clicking here (additional fees apply) or at your local Tax Collector's office or DMV. When the license plate on the presale voucher becomes authorized, the voucher can only be used with the issuance of that specific license plate; which can be processed at the time the license plate becomes available or when the customer’s current license plate is renewed.
If the plate fails to meet the presale voucher requirements within the two-year period the plate will not be manufactured and the customer may apply the presale voucher towards a different specialty license plate or apply for a refund for the specialty license plate fee only. Form HSMV 83363 is used to apply for a refund. Also, FLHSMV may de-authorize a specialty license plate and discontinue its issuance if the number of valid specialty license plate registrations falls below 3,000 valid registrations or 4,000 valid registrations for out-of-state colleges or universities for at least 12 consecutive months. If the plate associated with the presale voucher meets the voucher minimum but is subsequently de-authorized before the voucher is used, the voucher cannot be used towards a different specialty plate or be refunded. The competition for the design of a new specialty “Florida Stands with Israel” license plate has officially launched and the general public is invited to submit their designs through November 14th. Last month, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation (HB 1135), authorizing the creation of the specialty auto tag. The bill enjoyed bipartisan sponsorship and passed through both the Florida House and Senate unanimously. The contest is being sponsored by the Israeli-American Council (IAC) and technically coordinated by co-sponsor organization, Artists 4 Israel. The panel of judges will consist of the lead legislative sponsors of the bill – Sen. Aaron Bean, Sen. Lauren Book, who also has a specialty license plate for her nonprofit organization, Lauren's Kids, former Rep. JW Grant, who is now the state's Chief Information Officer, House Minority Leader Kionne McGhee, Rep. Scott Plakon, and Florida CFO/Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis – joined by Bal Harbour Mayor and community leader Gabe Groisman. After the final design is submitted and approved by the Florida Department of Transportation the IAC will roll out a community marketing campaign, along with the co-sponsorship of IAC for Action and their local community partners, to drive the necessary 3000 plate pre-sales needed to authorize production.
A portion of the revenue generated by sales of the new specialty license plate will benefit Hatzalah of Miami-Dade, inc., a non-profit that deploys community based paramedics to slash response times and increase survival rates. Israeli-American Council Board Member and IAC for Action Board Chairman Shawn Evenhaim stated: “The kind of warmth demonstrated by this specialty plate is why Florida has always been a leading destination for Israeli-Americans. This gesture celebrates a long and close relationship. Florida and Israel share many ties, including bilateral trade, common values, and leadership in cutting edge fields that have a quality of life impact for all citizens. Florida has been a leader over the years in the fight against anti-Jewish hatred and discrimination, for example, its groundbreaking anti-BDS law and codification this past year of the IHRA definition of antisemitism. We applaud and sincerely appreciate this meaningful expression of solidarity and are pleased that the Israeli-American community can play a part in support of these efforts. Thank you Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature.” For more information on the contest and to submit a design please visit: www.floridastandswithisrael.com.
